Fulham defender Calvin Bassey has admitted he misses Amsterdam after his time at Ajax and is still in regular contact with his former teammates from the Dutch club.
Viaplay have a short interview with the defender today in which they discuss his time at Ajax before his move to Fulham in 2023.
He joined the Dutch giants in a €23m deal from Glasgow Rangers in July 2022 and went on to make 39 appearances in all competitions for the club that season.
He never seemed to truly settle, though, with a series of high-profile mistakes seeing him regularly questioned by the Dutch media.
That ultimately pushed him out of the door a year later, with Fulham signing him in a €22.5m deal to bolster Marco Silva’s defence.
He’s been a regular for Fulham since, establishing himself as a key player in their defence and proving that his struggles in Amsterdam were more of a blip than a standard.
Most would argue that his year at Ajax was a disaster for him and the club, but it seems he doesn’t share that viewpoint and even misses Amsterdam.
“Yeah, I actually do. I do a bit. It was nice,” he answered when asked that very question.
“I miss the boys, we had a good team, a nice team. Nice guys. Obviously, I still see some of them here in the UK. (Jurrien) Timber, (Mohammed) Kudus, Edson (Alvarez). So yeah, it’s okay.
“Yeah, we text each other, we still speak. I still speak to Kenneth (Perez) and all the boys there (Ajax).”
“Yeah, I think it was alright,” he added when reflecting on his time at the club.
“It was a year to learn, a year to improve. I was able to play 40 games, I was able to play Champions League so yeah, for me, it was decent.”
